CMSimple On Mobile Devices

I just got a notification from Google about my website:

Google systems have tested 12 pages from your site and found that 100% of them have critical mobile usability errors. The errors on these 12 pages severely affect how mobile users are able to experience your website. These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users.

How can I adjust CMsimple for mobile users also?

Thanks,

I can't believe, that Google sends such messages, sounds like spam from a webdesign company,

A little more specific, please ... which site, which domain, which error messages?

Gert

So you should follow the instructions of your notification, to make your site "mobile-friendly for Google" :twisted:

For me your website IS mobile friendly, I have tested it right now, with my smartphone. Maybe I can learn something ;)

Hallo,

@Gert,

many webmasters get the mentioned message from Google.

For Google his website ist not mobile friendly, look here:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools ... ryruss.com

@spjoruss,

change this line

Code: Select all

<meta name="viewport" content="width=768, initial-scale=1.0, user-scalable=1">
to

Code: Select all

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
... and call the Google link once more. Perhaps Google will show a green headline after the change.

Hello you both,

thanks for this interesting discussion, and especially to meltemi for the link to the Google webmaster tool.

Unfortunately that's not enough. The green headline you only can get with a fully responsive template. But I don't like such "fully responsive templates", you can say: I hate them ...

The trend is clear: Also Apple has enlarged the screen of the iPhone, after many of years. Nobody uses a smartphone like this one on the Google page, to visit websites.

But the Google tool may be a good tool to check your website for mobile friendlyness (enough space between links, for example), if you are ready to ignore the red headline for the rest. I have done it for the CMSimple default template:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools ... test_45%2F

This template (and all my other templates) never will get the green headline, because they are optimized for "up to date smartphones" in landscape position,

Gert

PS: The remaining message is "Content wider than screen". So what?

The normal usage of a smartphone is:

- device rotation portrait - landscape
- scrolling horizontal and vertical with one finger
- zooming with two fingers

This way you can read convenient each area no wider than 480px, on nearly every smartphone, at least in landscape position.

I can not agree with Google's view on this theme - it's a little bit from yesterday ...

Hello Gert and Meltimi,

When I tried to change the viewport meta I do not see the meta when switching to html in CSimple. So I should edit it in the raw template in the folder?

The the default template you made. Does it make the links farther apart? Will that template be in the next update? Or, should I modify my template somehow?

Hello,

here you can find a responsive variant of the default template:

http://www.cmsimple.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=525

Maybe, I will make some more responsive templates this year, probably variations of existing templates,

Gert

PS: Have a look here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools ... responsive ;)

Okay, Thanks Gert.

The version I am using now is 4.4.4 since you put the responsive template in the main installation of version 4.4.5 what should I do to prevent the new version from overwriting my content and settings from my 4.4.4 installation when I upload the new version?

Usually I have used the quick update with no problem.

On sperryruss.com CMSimple 4.4.5 is running - that's ok.

I have added the template "example_responsive" to the current download today, the current download is CMSimple 4.5.

You can download CMSimple 4.5 and use only the template for your website. The template works in every CMSimple Version. You will find the template in the folder ./templates/of the unzipped download.

Download CMSimple 4.5 (with the new template): http://www.cmsimple.org/en/?Downloads___CMSimple

If you want update to CMSimple 4.5, use the update, the update does overwrite nothing, no content, no config, no language file.

Download Update: http://www.cmsimple.org/en/?Downloads__ ... __CMSimple
